Kid Tips: Nine proven parenting strategies
By Tom McMahon

There are four distinct stages of parenting, each requiring new skills and strategies: the baby years, childhood (3 to 10), adolescence (11 to 20) and adult children. The third stage, adolescence, is the one that many parents have a difficult time adjusting to. Here are nine proven parenting strategies that can help build a strong parent-adolescent relationship:
1. Don't try to force a conversation or ask too many questions.
2. When teens do want to talk or when they have a question, stop what you're doing (if possible) and listen carefully.
3. Spend more time listening than talking.
4. If they have a problem or concern, let them ponder it and talk through a solution.
5. Ask if they want your advice (they usually do, and they appreciate this question).
6. Ask them for advice ("How do you download music from the Internet?").
7. Take advantage of the occasions when they like to talk (in the car, after a date, etc.).
8. Show interest in their passions ("Can you show me your new skateboard trick?").
9. Be available.

Great Tips, I agree! I believe that being consistent is the key, makes the little ones get into a routine, and makes everyones life easier. They know what is expected of them, and they know what they should be doing next.
